A bettor made nearly half a million dollars on the ouster of Nicolás Maduro just before it was officially announced, raising questions about potential gains made from confidential information of the event.
Predictions made on the forecasting site, a crypto-powered platform, that the leader would be no longer in control by the month's conclusion surged in the hours before President Donald Trump announced on the weekend that the Venezuelan leader had been seized.
A particular user, which registered on the site last month and placed four wagers, all on the Venezuelan situation, made more than $nearly half a million from a starting bet of $32.5K.
The identity is unknown. This unidentified trader had only a cryptographic address for identification.
Market statistics shows that participants put the odds of Maduro's exit at just 6.5% in the late afternoon of Friday, January 2nd.
However the market's assessment had increased to 11% by the end of the day and spiked dramatically in the early hours of Saturday, suggesting a rapid movement in positions right before the official statement was made.
"That trade has all the signs of a transaction based on confidential knowledge," stated Dennis Kelleher.
A small number of other individuals also earned significant sums from bets on the same outcome.
Elected officials are starting to take note.
A new rule introduced on Monday aims to prohibit public officials from making trades on forecasting platforms if they have "confidential government knowledge" related to a bet.
Event-driven betting sites have become increasingly popular in the past few years, with users able to wager on everything from sports outcomes to politics.
The industry encountered regulatory challenges under the previous administration. But it has experienced less resistance during the current presidency.
Using confidential knowledge is illegal in the securities markets, but there are more ambiguous rules in the prediction market arena.
An official representative for another major platform said their site "has clear rules against trading on insider information of any form."
