The former Brazilian leader has been arrested after authorities found he posed a definite escape threat while under house arrest.
The one-time leader was sentenced of orchestrating a government overthrow in September and sentenced more than a 27-year term in prison, but he was staying under home detention pending legal challenges.
High Court Judge Alexandre de Moraes said the decision to arrest the 70-year-old politician was a safety action after "new facts" were revealed.
This encompassed trying to remove his electronic bracelet and a call for a demonstration that could facilitate a chance to flee".
In a paperwork permitting the custody, the judge said data from the facility tracking his home detention suggested the ex-president's plan to remove the surveillance device to guarantee victory in his escape.
This, it said, would be made easier by the chaos caused by the protest called by his child.
His offspring, Flávio Bolsonaro, who holds office as a congressional representative, called for a gathering of his supporters near Bolsonaro's home to take place on Saturday night.
Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on social media on the previous day: Will you battle for your homeland, or watch it all from your phone there on your couch? I urge you to battle with us."
He said the demonstration would be so backers could seek divine intervention for his well-being and for the restoration of democratic rule in our nation."
Part of Justice Moraes's decision was the potential of his move to foreign missions near the residence, considering that the inquiries revealed a history of arranging to request asylum through a diplomatic representation", a announcement said.
The legal document highlights that the US embassy in the national capital, Brasilia, is situated around 13km from Bolsonaro's home.
Bolsonaro's legal woes have drawn the ire of fellow conservative nationalist American leader Donald Trump, leading him to implement a half-rate duty on imports of Brazilian goods.
The former president is being detained in a federal law enforcement building in the capital and will experience a detention review on the following day.
It was only on last Friday that the his legal team asked the Supreme Court to authorize him to complete his entire prison term under domestic detention, with digital surveillance.
They also asked that Bolsonaro be authorized to leave his home for medical care, saying he required regular treatment for respiratory ailments and other illnesses.
He was convicted of orchestrating a scheme aimed at retaining his authority after he lost the national vote to his left-wing rival, Lula.
Top judicial officials said that he had knowledge of a plan which involved plans to assassinate the current president and his vice-presidential running mate, his vice-presidential candidate, and to detain and kill Justice Moraes - the top judicial official who has been overseeing his judicial proceedings.
The scheme was prevented because it couldn't obtain the backing of the army and air force commanders. Lula was inaugurated without incident on January 1st, 2023.
But a week later, on 8 January, thousands of Bolsonaro supporters invaded and destroyed government buildings in the federal district, the capital city.
The security forces took action and around approximately 1,500 persons were arrested.
The justices found that the protesters had been incited by him whose scheme, they said, was for the national armed forces to intervene, reestablish control and reinstate his authority.
At the time, his attorneys called the 27 years and three months sentence extremely harsh.
He was also prohibited from seeking elected position until the year 2060 - eight years later after the conclusion of his imprisonment.
The former president called the court case a "witch hunt and said it was aimed at blocking him competing in the next presidential race.
