Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside French aircraft in a coordinated attack targeting an hidden munitions depot in Syria operated by the Daesh militant organization, according to the UK's MoD.

The facility, located using intelligence, was assessed as housing weapons and explosive materials, the release indicated, and was positioned in mountainous terrain just to the north of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our fighter planes utilized laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to hit a number of access tunnels leading to the depot... early reports are that the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.

There was no indication of any civilian impact in the operation late on Saturday and every plane involved returned safely, the MoD added.

The Typhoon fighters were assisted by a Voyager tanker plane.

The Islamic State group - referred to as the so-called Islamic State - enforced extremist governance over large swathes of both Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This strike shows British leadership, and commitment to operate in unison with our allies, to stamp out any revival of Daesh and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the area," Britain's Defence Chief the Defence Secretary remarked.

RAF aircraft have performed patrols over Syrian airspace to "deter any attempted comeback" of the group following its military defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the ministry said.

"I must thank the personnel of our armed forces involved in this operation for their professionalism and their courage," the Defence Secretary said. "They were part of thousands of UK service members stationed over the holidays. This mission, to eliminate dangerous terrorists who threaten our safety, highlights how UK forces are prepared to act, continuously, protecting the UK within its borders and influential overseas."

During December, the US military executed what it termed a "massive strike" on Islamic State objectives in the country, after an ambush killed two US troops and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations says IS still has an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 combatants in Iraq and Syria.
