Now is optimal to alter Manchester United's system - Ruben Amorim insists.

Man Utd captain Bruno Fernandes was among multiple senior stars absent from the Boxing Day triumph against Newcastle United.

Boss Ruben Amorim contends that altering Man Utd's tactical system due to external scrutiny would have meant "his demise" for him.

In a first against Newcastle United, Amorim abandoned his customary back three setup with wide defenders and opted to field an orthodox back four shielded by two central midfielders.

By his own admission this effectively transformed into a back six in the final stages as his squad dug in for a crucial result - securing just their second clean sheet of the campaign.

Although he once famously said that even the highest authority could pressure him to tweak his approach, Amorim insists the option to utilize varied formations has consistently been part of his long-term vision.

Yet, he clarifies he could only make the switch when his team were performing at an acceptable level - or else it would look as if he was giving in to outside pressure.

"At the time I came here last season, I understood maybe I don't have the squad to perform effectively in a back three, but it was the commencement of a project," he commented.

"The goal was to forge an philosophy. Today is a distinct juncture. We don't have a lot of players, and we need be flexible, so they understand the reason we are switching things up.

"It is not because of the influence of you guys, or the supporters.

"When the press talk about altering the system repeatedly, I can't make a change because the players will believe I'm changing because of external voices and I believe that is the end for the manager.

"When we are getting results in our system, that is the opportunity to evolve.

"This will help us develop into a more complete side because when all the players are back, we are not intending to use three defenders exclusively."

Squad Issues Continue

With just two victories in their last eight outings before beating Newcastle, it is questionable whether Amorim is correct to claim his side have been in good form.

He is, though, operating with a severely stretched roster, with multiple senior players already unavailable for the upcoming fixture against struggling Wolves.

That figure will rise if playmaker Mason Mount is unable to shake off the knock that led to his exit from the Newcastle game at half-time.

Captain Bruno Fernandes is among those who will be absent for the Wolves match, despite the fact he is understood to be pushing his boss to allow him to return after his hamstring problem.

"Fernandes is already telling me he needs to practice," revealed Amorim. "But there is absolutely no possibility he is going to play against Wolves. Definitely not. You can write that."

The Captain's Influence Endures

Nevertheless, the 31-year-old will likely still be deeply engaged, as while most unavailable stars view matches from a private box, Fernandes was observed keeping a close eye on the warm-ups from the mouth of the tunnel before the Newcastle game.

Amorim anticipates his captain to continue offering guidance.

"The guy is a leader," he declared. "He must not be that guy that when he is not playing, he's silent and speaking. He's constantly communicating. That's why he's the skipper.

"He has bad things sometimes - the way he gesticulates - but he has a multitude of strengths. Even after he recovers, he heads to observe the rest of the squad practicing. There are a many aspects that go unnoticed.

"I don't know if he wants my position or not, but he's a leader. He is a leader."

Recovery Schedule for Injured Personnel

Although the exact timeline for the captain's comeback - and that of other unavailable players like Kobbie Mainoo, Matthijs de Ligt, and Harry Maguire - remains uncertain, before the conclusion of January, the club will see the return of Noussair Mazraoui, Amad Diallo, and Bryan Mbeumo from international competition.
