Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have officially pledged to focus on the grievances raised by the new generation. This commitment comes after the turbulent anti-graft unrest that took place in September, which led to considerable casualties.
"Consensus should not be what a leader wants, it must be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane after the agreement was finalized.
The September uprising was sparked by widespread anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a spark for deeper resentment stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and persistent allegations of deep-rooted graft in politics.
According to the official agreement, the positions for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.
In a related development, the sitting interim prime minister over the weekend held consultations with several leading political figures. These talks involved former prime ministers and the heads of rival major parties, marking the first such gathering since the time of the uprising.
After these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that holding a credible election is a collective responsibility. The statement affirmed the government's commitment to ensuring a safe and open atmosphere for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to remove any room for doubt.
