Zak Crawley Claims Ignorance of Captain Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Remarks

The English opener Zak Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of statements made by skipper Stokes regarding the team environment not being "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes made those words in several interviews in the wake of his team's loss in the second match of the Ashes versus the Australians earlier this month.

Ahead of the Adelaide Test, where England now face defeat with a match to spare, Stokes stated he had allowed his message to "circulate freely" within the playing group.

"I have completed the necessary discussions in recent days that I needed to have done," said Stokes.

But, following the opener made 85 on the fourth day in the third Test, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. We take everything that is said in the media with a pinch of salt," Crawley continued.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

The captain made the "weak men" observation after his side were beaten in the second Test to fall two matches behind.

The team subsequently took a break to a Queensland resort between the second and the upcoming Tests.

Before the Adelaide contest, he revealed his players had held "raw" conversations and he had asked them to "show a bit of dog" in their battle to remain in contention in the Ashes battle.

Nevertheless, Crawley stated the messaging from the captain and head coach McCullum had remained in line with their previous tenure in charge.

"It's been very positive, unchanged," said Crawley. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, play our way, with lots of freedom. It felt like we were capable of an extraordinary feat entering this game."

Australia Close of Rapid Ashes Triumph

The opener's wicket late on Saturday came during a decisive triple-strike by Australia spinner Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in 20 deliveries – he also bowled Brook and Stokes himself – meant England 207-6 in pursuit of a daunting total of 435 runs.

Consequently, the home team require four wickets on Sunday's final day to secure an insurmountable 3-0 advantage with three Tests.

Defeat would prolong the English team's drought in this country to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth straight overseas Ashes defeat.

The current battle will be completed in just 11 days of cricket – with England losing the first two Tests in rapid time each.

The last time 1921, when Australia completed victory in the UK in eight days, has the outcome of the urn been determined more swiftly. The hosts have also triumphed in 11 days on two other instances in the modern era.

"This is disappointing," said Crawley. "We came here to win the Ashes and we're facing elimination now."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we will certainly approach it like that," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been tough. Australia is a formidable side. It was inevitably tough touring here to face them. They were the front-runners and have demonstrated their quality."

Pope's Place Under Scrutiny

Although Crawley's innings in the third Test probably answers questions about his immediate future in the England team, Ollie Pope appears under threat for his spot in the Melbourne Test on Boxing Day.

The Surrey batsman fell for 17 in England's second innings on Saturday, extending his modest returns versus Australia.

In 16 Ashes innings, the Surrey man has failed to score a half-century and averages 17.62.

Only one other England player since 1900 – Dennis Amiss – has featured an equal number of innings in the top order in the Ashes and returned a lower average.

But, the opener said any notion Pope is being scrutinised originates with "you guys" – referring to the press – "not inside the camp."

"The squad is fully aware of his considerable talent," said he. "He has had a good year if I'm honest."

"He has played several excellent innings. It is talk from the outside. There is no chat like that on Ollie in the camp," Crawley concluded.
